¿Qué es y cómo se contagia?
El sarampión es una enfermedad de corta duración causada por el virus del sarampión . Es una infección muy contagiosa que se propaga de una persona a otra a través de la tos y los estornudos. Una persona infectada puede propagar el virus desde 4 días antes hasta 4 días después de que aparece la erupción cutánea.
¿Cuáles son los síntomas?
Los síntomas empiezan a aparecer 10 a 12 días después de la exposición al virus . El primer signo de infección es fiebre elevada ( 39.4° C- 40.5°C) que dura de 4 a 7 días. Es seguida por goteo nasal, tos, conjuntivitis y la aparición de pequeñas manchas blanco- azulosas en el interior de las mejillas. Se desarrolla una erupción cutánea en promedio 14 días después de las exposición y finalmente, se extiende a manos y pies.
El sarampión puede ser mortal
El sarampión es una enfermedad muy grave; es una de las principales causas de muerte ente los niños pequeños en todo el mundo. Aproximadamente el 30% de los casos informados de sarampión presentan una o más complicaciones; los niños menores de 5 años y los adultos de más de 20 años están en mayor riesgo. Las complicaciones incluyen ceguera, diarrea ( que causa deshidratación ), infecciones en el oído, neumonía y con menos frecuencia, inflamación cerebral, crisis epilépticas e incluso la muerte.
¿Su hijo está en riesgo?
Los niños no vacunados tiene el mayor riesgo de infectarse. El sarampión sigue siendo común en muchos países en desarrollo: Viajar a áreas donde los índices de sarampión son altos incrementa la probabilidad de exposición y brotes de sarampión. En 2014, 114,900 personas murieron en todo el mundo a causa del sarampión, la mayoría eran niños menores de 5 años de edad.
